Art Director Resume
There is a simple hiring formula: your working experience and skills plus our functional resume builder. Do a sum and get your winning resume!
The position of art director is definitely rooted in creativity. However, hiring managers don’t expect anything more from you other than a basic black and white document that lays out your work experience and showcases you as a great professional in a succinct and lucid way. Thus, verbal dexterity trumps visual representation. Despite the restriction as to the content of the resume, you still have some wiggle room to create a minimalist layout or move sections around. Where your creative juices can really flow is in for your portfolio. For your resume, simply stick to the tips we provide you in this article and your application will turn out just perfect.
This is the resume profile. Use it to introduce yourself to the recruiter. The goal is to quickly leave a good impression on the recruiter so that they will think fondly of you as a candidate and want to get to know you more. That is why this section needs to pack a punch highlighting many of your strengths at once. Have awards? Nailed a $100,000 project? Conceived and implemented a unique idea? Let them know about it in 2-3 sentences. It’ll motivate the recruiter to keep reading.
Given that art directors are usually promoted from artists, illustrators, and designers, it is likely that you already have the hard skills necessary for this job. Now you need to make sure you have soft skills for the job. However, don’t just put the skills for the art director resume into this section. Pepper references to your skills all over your copy by including them in examples of your past duties and achievements. By doing so, the recruiter will more easily be able to imagine you in this role.
An art-related Bachelor’s degree is the minimum education requirement for this role. Usually, art directors have a Master of Fine Arts degree. If you feel like you are underperforming in this section, beef it up with additional information such as GPA, coursework, art-related educational projects, and workshops/seminars.
It is possible that you’re entry level as an art director but have amassed significant experience as a designer, illustrator, or artist. Your task is to highlight your management-related experience and duties. Thus, even if you have worked as a graphic designer for many years, you can accent your leadership and strength in such a role. Don’t use vague descriptions like ‘handled imagery.’ It is better to say ‘Concepted and developed images,’ ‘spearheaded a project,’ or ‘motivated a team of freelance artists.’

Can’t decide whether a CV or resume for an art director will help you get a job? Let's compare! Although both CV and resume have a generic goal to present the qualifications and experience of the candidate, these documents differ in structure and length:
CV
A CV does not have length limitations.
A CV is a detailed review not only of your whole work experience, but also of academic history, including scholarships, research, and publications.
The CV text remains general to all job applications.
RESUME
The standard for a resume is one page.
A resume implies a brief summary of work experience, duties from previous jobs, and skills.
The content of the resume should be changed for each vacancy, to meet its employment characteristics and requirements.
A resume is a shortcut presenting all your related experience on one page. Therefore, this document is more preferable by recruiters because it helps to identify the right person from the number of candidates faster.
Text formatting can be a time-consuming process if you aim to meet all the requirements of business correspondence. To save your time, we have collected all the proven layouts in our editor. Now you can’t make the wrong choice since each layout complies with modern business standards.
