Start with the job posting. It has plenty of information you’ll need to use when writing your copy. Read it carefully and take notice of the preferred qualifications and job responsibilities. Weave them into your letter to highlight that you get what they need.

Don’t underestimate the power of keywords. So if you fail to mention a required college degree, the company’s name, or that you “test software” and have knowledge of “software development life-cycle,” you can miss an opportunity to land a job or even an interview.

Customize it. We all recycle our old resumes and cover letters. Even though it is recommended to write each one from scratch, you may think you know better. However, please remember to tailor each one for the specific company’s needs, mission, values, etc.

Don’t push too hard. You are expected to sell yourself, so exhibit your best bits and pieces. However, they should not feel over the top. Keep in mind that the employer needs to see your value for the company. So show them how exactly they benefit if they hire you.

Highlight both your hard and soft skills. It goes without saying that you demonstrate yourself as a high-end specialist and mention all relevant qualifications. Additionally, you should mention how well you get along with people and can explain technical stuff to non-technical people.
