Do it short. You probably know that your document should not exceed one page. Given that it is just a kind of a business card that precedes your resume, it should be engaging. Include only two-three most relevant qualifications and stuff but do it to the point and in detail.

Don’t include irrelevant stuff. You may want to beef up your job application, especially if you are entry level and not much experience. However, your travel experience or a medal in a local judo competition will hardly add to your qualifications.

Pay attention to your language. Use active verbs. For example, instead of mentioning your “creativity and problem-solving skills,” say something specific to your accomplishments using ‘altered,’ ‘devised,’ drafted,’ ‘invented,’ ‘fixed,’ ‘resolved,’ etc.

Don’t use empty words and generic descriptions. If you pump up your letter with phrases like “looking for a great position,” “have excellent communication skills,” “works well independently or as part of a team,” the recruiters will pass you over without thinking twice.

Stick to a formal business letter format with a proper personalized greeting and sincere closing paragraph. Remember to indicate the position you’re applying for. In the middle part, try to answer the question, ‘Why should we hire you?’
