How to create a good cover letter for an executive chef: free tips and tricks

Writing a perfect text for your resume is a must. This short and simple document is a crucial step in getting the job of your dreams. Provide all the information about your person and show your expert skills and qualifications to the employer. At GetCoverLetter, you will find an executive chef cover letter example that will give you some idea of how to interest the employer.

Tell the recruiter about your experience, creativity, and passion for the culinary arts. Prove to him or her your ability not only to refine the concept of the restaurant but oversee daily operations in the kitchen.

Don’t use a boring lead for your letter, such as “I’m writing to apply for the Executive Chef position.” Draw the hiring manager into your story by sharing what about this employer most impresses or captivates you and why, specifically, you want to work for them.

The most successful applicant for this role must be a self-organized, competitive, and responsible person who provides high results. You have to be responsible for the taste of the meal and create practical solutions for improving the menu. As with most creative positions, your past results will carry a lot of weight with the employer. Quantify some of your past accomplishments.

A big mistake is when people focus on how perfect the position would be for them instead of how they can make an impact. Dedicate part of your letter to explaining what you can do for the employer based on your previous experience.

You need strong interpersonal and communicative skills for professional interaction with the guests and instructing sous chefs. Your work is visible to both restaurant managers and patrons. So the Executive Chef plays a big role in the public relations of the establishment. They must be able to personally handle all customer needs, both good and bad.

Don’t include information that isn’t true and don’t include negative comments or excuses related to past employers or past employment. Hiring Managers always check references and verify past employment information, especially when it comes to a job where performance is directly related to the success of the business. Being caught in a lie is not the way to build a successful working relationship.

Tomas Miller
Recruiter “High Cuisine”

Dear Tomas,
My first experience in fine dining was a visit to your restaurant with my family to celebrate my mom’s big promotion when I was 11 years old. It was the best food I have ever eaten, and at that moment, I knew what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I haven’t stopped perfecting my cooking skills ever since. When I saw the position of Executive Chef open up at High Cuisine, it was like my whole life had come full circle.

I started working in restaurants as soon as I was old enough to get hired at the age of 15. After graduation from high school, I attended The International Culinary Centre where I graduated in the top 5% of my class. I have trained with some of the top chefs in the New York area and got my first Executive Chef position in fine dining eight years ago at the age of 26. Each day I come to work, my passion and love of cooking grows. I strive every day to improve my craft and become the best chef that I can be.

My elite training, extensive experience, and passion for the culinary arts are complimented by my strong interpersonal and communicative skills. I enjoy all professional interactions with the guests and teaching the sous chefs. I understand that my role towards the success of the restaurant goes beyond the quality of the food I serve. I am the face of the restaurant, and as such, I fully embrace my public relations role. I am very comfortable spending time interacting with guests and handling all customer needs, good or bad.

I hope to tell you much more about myself during the interview. Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Flint.

Frequently Asked Questions

You already have some knowledge that you can use to make a strong cover letter. But we have prepared for you a list of general questions & answers to help you prepare even better. Learn more about how to create an excellent document.

  1. Do I need to put a date in my cover letter?
The date on your cover letter is essential if you’re sending it as a separate file and not in the email’s body. In other cases, the date will be visible through the email timestamp, recorded by a third-party job portal, or by a company’s applicants’ tracking system.
  2. How do I mention my salary expectations in a cover letter?
For an Executive Chef cover letter, it is best to set your financial expectations in the form of a range. For example, you could put it in a sentence such as “my salary expectation is within the range of $50,000 to $65,000.” Remember that you should only mention this information if the job opening specifically says.
  3. Do I need to add my address to a cover letter?
No, putting a physical address on your cover letter is no longer mandatory as now they’re mainly sent online. Moreover, applying from abroad or another city and putting your address on a cover letter might put you at a disadvantage compared to other candidates.
  4. Should I put a header on my cover letter?
The header is one of the most important parts of the cover letter. Typically it includes your full name, desired position, email address, address (optional), and phone number. You should also include the recipient’s first and last name, position, the name of their company, office address, phone number, and email.
  5. Do I need to sign a cover letter if I submit it online?
No, just put your full name at the end of the cover letter closing. You can finish off with something like “Best regards” or “Sincerely.”

Do not waste time on doubts that you can spend on composing your document.
